G. Wills at the Lyceum Theatre, London, on 4 May 1895. Wills's play was based on episodes in Don Quixote (1605-1615), the famous novel by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616). Using their distinctive collage technique, The Beggarstaffs designed three versions of this monumental and sombre poster for a production starring Henry Irving. Their approach was a radical departure for theatrical advertising, and Irving declined to use it, declaring he wanted 'No more mills!' He similarly rejected a later Beggarstaffs' design for the play Robespierre. Although not seen on the hoardings, this poster for A Chapter from Don Quixote was influential through its illustration in various periodicals.","physicalDescription":"'Lyceum - Don Quixote'; Original design for a poster intended to advertise Sir Henry Irving's production of Don Quixote at the Lyceum Theatre, London, but not issued as a poster; Showing Don Quixote seated on a white horse, holding a large staff, with a windmill behind him and text in the top-right corner; Black and brown paper cut out and pasted on white; Signed.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Pryde, James","id":"A8759"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Nicholson, William Newzam Prior (Sir)","id":"A8697"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Beggarstaff Brothers","id":"A9044"},"association":{"text":"artists","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"collage","id":"AAT138699"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Collage","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2019LL9258","2006AL3867","2006AP6604","2017KB3795"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"514","id":"THES49549"},"free":"","case":"EXP","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"posters","id":"AAT27221"}],[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1895","earliest":"1895-01-01","latest":"1895-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"\tBequeathed by J.
