The status of the Lakes as an international tourist attraction dates from this visit. Capitalising on the publicity surrounding the royal visit, Edmund Falconer and F. B. Chatterton, then managers of the Lyceum Theatre, London commissioned William Telbin to produce a diorama, which could be scrolled out across the stage and which could show six separate scenes to be used at different points during the pantomime, Little Red Riding Hood. This scene shows the royal party in Dunday Bay, on the edge of the Middle Lake.\r\n\r\nPrince Albert died on 15 December, by which time it would have been difficult to alter the diorama (the pantomime was scheduled to open on 26 December) so a statement was made to the effect that it was being retained as a memory of happier days. \r\n \r\nThe pantomime ran until April 1862, in part owing to the attraction of Telbin's work. The diorama was then was extracted and subsequently used in a balled called Killarney, with music by Michael Balfe. The production ran until the end of the Falconer and Chatterton's managment of the Lyceum, in December 1862.","briefDescription":"Watercolour design, Dunday Bay, from a Diorama of Killarney, by William Telbin the elder, 1861","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>Victoria and Albert Museum, Department of Engraving, Illustration and Design and Department of Paintings, Accessions 1926</u>, London: Board of Education, 1927."}],"production":"This is a design for one of five painted diorama, made for a pantomime version of <i>Little Red Riding Hood</i>, which was performed at the Lyceum Theatre in London from December 1861 to April 1862.
