As today, the Museum is seen arranged around a large central courtyard. Extending the buildings southwards in the direction of Cromwell Road, the newest additions are at the bottom of the sheet: the Casts Courts (finished 1873), Art Library (now the National Art Library) range (finished ca. 1884), and two new courts labelled 'Science Library and Reading Room' and 'Tapestries and Furniture and Costumes' (now rooms 41 and 46, also finished ca. 1884). The space between and to the south of these additions, including the present Cromwell Road front of the Museum, would not be developed until the time of Aston Webb (finished 1909). A number of strips of paper have been glued to the surface of the print, showing or suggesting alterations. These include the rebuilding of the eastern side of the court and the removal - or omission from a future plan, perhaps to be used by the public - of both the outer portion of the range west of the quadrangle and the Refreshment Room kitchens (north of the Lecture Theatre block).","physicalDescription":"Print with watercolour on paper backed with linen, with additions, on strips of paper glued to the surface of the print, in pen and ink. In the printed ground plan of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the buildings are largely shown as they existed following the completion of the Art Library (now the National Art Library) and rooms 41 and 45. The eastern (right-hand) portion of the site is occupied by the North and South Courts and, aligned on an axis corresponding with that of the Lecture Theatre range, the Cast Courts. The centre of the site comprises the Museum courtyard, the north side of which is formed by the Lecture Theatre range. The south side of the court is formed by the Art Library building, which has seven bays extending either side of a projecting centrepiece. Forming an open court, two rectangular blocks extend southwards from the south elevation of the Art Library range. Strips of paper, some of which have buildings outlined in pen and ink, are glued over a number of areas of the print. These comprise the western side of the west range of the court (left blank); the range fronting the east side of the court (redrawn as a block ten bays in length); the cloakrooms and two ranges to the north and west of the lecture theatre range (redrawn without the block containing kitchens for the Refreshment Rooms); the Fernery (redrawn without adjoining structures); and north-east staircase (redrawn as gallery space). Print tinted to detail existence of upper floors; labelled with principal contents on ground and upper floors.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"pen and ink","id":"x30618"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"},{"text":"architectural drawing","id":"AAT54197"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Print with watercolour on paper backed with linen, with additions in pen and ink and annotations in pencil","categories":[{"text":"History of the V&A","id":"THES252692"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2014GX9678"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"A","shelf":"181","box":"B"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"South Kensington","id":"x31226"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1880-1900","earliest":"1875-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"54.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"height of paper","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"49.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"width of paper","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design for Victoria and Albert Museum, architectural plan, about 1880-1900","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>Victoria and Albert Museum, Department of Engraving, Illustration and Design and Department of Paintings, Accessions 1927</u>, London: Board of Education, 1928."},{"reference":{"text":"Physick, John. <u>The Victoria and Albert Museum: The History of Its Building</u>.
