The Chinese began to use it to provide a protective coating for wooden and bamboo bowls at least 3,000 years ago. Lacquer workers quickly realised the decorative potential of the material. They coated the surface of vessels with multiple layers of lacquer and carved them with decorative patterns. Here two pheasants are shown against a background of flowers.","physicalDescription":"Black lacquer carved on reddish- buff ground, decorated with two pheasants in flights against a background of camellias on the inside and a spiral scroll border underneath.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2021MX6407","2006AL5012","2021NA3779"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES370387"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES370384"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Storage box","id":""}],[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1300-1350","earliest":"1295-01-01","latest":"1350-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir Harry and Lady Garner","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"31.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish, carved black lacquer, China, Yuan dynasty, ca.1300-1350","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"The Oriental Ceramic Society. <u>Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society 1955-57</u>, vol. 30.
