At the centre of the north range is the decorative façade of the Lecture Theatre block. The design pre-dates its completion: rather than the stylized scene that was carried out, the composition shown filling the pediment is densely peopled and corresponds with a rejected proposal put forward by Godfrey Sykes. Otherwise, the façade of the Lecture Theatre is shown as executed, replete with its recessed first-floor balcony. Had Francis Fowke's grand scheme for the Victoria and Albert Museum been carried out in full, the Lecture Theatre elevation would have been a centrepiece that was visible from Cromwell Road: Fowke intended the south side of the quadrangle to have been finished with an open screen, flanked by curving colonnades (see for instance E.1023-1927). Instead, the south side was later closed with the National Art Library range (begun ca. 1878). The older buildings forming the east side of the quadrangle were eventually rebuilt ca. 1901, finally rendering the courtyard stylistically coherent.","physicalDescription":"Pencil and watercolour on paper, depicting the inner quadrangle (now the Madejski Garden) of the Victoria and Albert Museum, looking north-west. In the centre of the north side is the projecting three-storey façade of the Lecture Theatre block, the ground floor of which resembles striated masonry. The upper two floors are divided into three parts (of one bay, three bays, one bay) by paired pilasters. At first-floor level, the round-headed arches of the central three bays form a recessed balcony; either side, the round-headed arches of the flanking bays encase paired windows and a decorative tympanum. The diminutive second floor is pierced by tripartite sets of round-headed window openings, above which the central section of the façade is crowned by a pediment and flag. The remainder of the elevations shown in this drawing - the north end of the west range of the quadrangle, and all but the easternmost bay-and-a-half of the north range of the quadrangle - are lower in height, consisting of two smaller storeys and a mezzanine. These elevations are divided into bays by giant pilasters, between which are paired rectangular windows at ground-floor level, and paired round-headed windows at first-floor level. Small groups of figures stand in the grassed quadrangle, which has potted shrubs and central and perimeter paths.\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Francis Fowke","id":"A34042"},"association":{"text":"architect","id":"THES265157"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting","id":"THES250889"},{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"History of the V&A","id":"THES252692"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2011EX1970","2006AM4435","2018KY3865","2021NB8322"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"A","shelf":"151","box":"B"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"}],[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1860-1866","earliest":"1855-01-01","latest":"1866-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Madame Mangeot","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"27.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"width of paper","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"18.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"height of paper","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design for Victoria and Albert Museum by Francis Fowke, north side of inner qaudrangle, ca.1860-1866","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>Victoria and Albert Museum, Department of Engraving, Illustration and Design and Department of Paintings, Accessions 1927</u>, London: Board of Education, 1928."},{"reference":{"text":"Physick, John. <u>The Victoria and Albert Museum: The History of Its Building</u>.
