The elegantly carved mask captures the serene qualities of the earlier Kamakura period (1185-1333) prototypes from which this Bosatsu mask derives. There are some differences from the earlier masks, notably the face here is somewhat longer and less full. The mask is carved from three separate pieces of wood - the face and the two sides - held together with glue, and with layers of ground (J. <i>gofun</i>) applied to the bare wood over which details in pigments, lacquer and gilding have been applied. There are traces of a blue-green paint remaining in the folds of the hair. The diadem has traces of gilding in many areas. There is much surface pigment loss, which greatly increases one's sense of the mask's age. There are two holes for cords to attach the mask, both of which show signs of wear, as do the carved strands of hair over which the cords would have passed.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"painting","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved, painted and gilded wood","categories":[],"styles":[{"text":"Muromachi","id":"AAT18561"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AT6547","2017JY0505"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES367139"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Mask","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"15th century","earliest":"1400-01-01","latest":"1500-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"24.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"19.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Messrs Yamanaka & Co.
