He is surrounded by the main eight forms he is believed to have assumed to teach Buddhism and to destroy demons in various nearby countries. In 779 the Tibetan emperor Trisong Detsen invited him to Tibet from Uddiyana (the Swat Valley in Pakistan) to subdue demons. The demons were opposing the founding of the first Tibetan monastery at Samye. Padmasmabhava is especially revered by the ‘Old Order’ or Nying ma in Tibet, and has the status of a Buddha. This is a particularly fine example of a gold <i>tangka</i> or <i>Sertang</i> (transliterated Tibetan: gSer t’ang) painted in gold on a red background.","physicalDescription":"Padmasambhava, ser thang.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gouache on cotton cloth","categories":[{"text":"Buddhism","id":"THES48984"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2011FC2550","2006AV6897","2020MP9797","2020MP9798","2017KE1397","2021MX3538","2021MX3544"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES312259"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES312259"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES316819"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tangka cover","id":""}],[{"text":"Tangka cover","id":""}],[{"text":"Tangka","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Tibet","id":"x29910"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"18th century","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased from Messrs.
