Although Austrian, Julius Klinger (1876-1942) worked from 1897 to 1915 in Germany. Since there were no advertising agencies in Germany before the 1920s, manufacturers usually commissioned posters from printers. The leading printers in Berlin were Hollerbaum & Schmidt, who created very distinctive posters. They were designed by their studio of high-calibre artists, such as Klinger. Thus an innovative and influential style of poster evolved in Germany in the years around 1900.","physicalDescription":"Poster with a leaping flea trailing increasingly large drops of blood.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Klinger, Julius","id":"A7771"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Hollerbaum & Schmidt","id":"A7812"},"association":{"text":"publishers","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lithographic ink","id":"AAT187750"}],"techniques":[{"text":"colour lithography","id":"AAT190525"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"colour lithography","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Periodicals","id":"THES48913"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2019LJ4803","2006AR9137"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MM","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Berlin","id":"x28746"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1907","earliest":"1907-01-01","latest":"1907-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Underground Electric Railways Co. of London, Ltd.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"704","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"923","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Poster by Julius Klinger for the German satirical magazine, 'Lustige Blätter'.
