Belgian artists, inspired by French work, began designing commercial posters in the mid-1890s. Many advertised coffee and cocoa, products of Belgium’s imperial trade. Meunier, an illustrator and printmaker, started designing posters in 1895. This poster demonstrates how quickly artists and printers learned the new skills of colour lithography (printing from stone). Before the 1890s, no printers in Belgium had adequate equipment for colour-printing large sheets.","physicalDescription":"Poster","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Meunier, Henri Georges","id":"A7767"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lithographic ink","id":"AAT187750"}],"techniques":[{"text":"colour lithography","id":"AAT190525"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Nouveau","id":"AAT21430"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM4675","2006AR9114","2019LJ4801","2022ND1942"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"B","id":"THES304869"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Belgium","id":"x28742"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1897","earliest":"1897-01-01","latest":"1897-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Bertram Evans","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"650","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"805","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Henri Meunier.
