Competition among French printers led many of them to issue their own advertising posters. Charles Verneau, an enthusiast of the artistic poster, was among them. He commissioned Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) to execute this enormous street scene, one of the artist’s favourite subjects.
