The bat is synonymous with happiness, while the peach stands for longevity. The Chinese character for longevity is also painted onto the fruits shown on the exterior of the dish. The whole scene illustrates the traditional Chinese birthday greeting 'May your happiness be as the Eastern Sea and may you live to be as old as the Southern Mountain'.","physicalDescription":"Of saucer shape with rounded, spreading sides and neatly-made foot ring. Painted in the centre inside is a design of a fruiting peach tree growing from a steep cliff-side over a sea of waves, surrounded by five flying bats (symbolising the five happinesses) and round the outside are pairs of bats alternating with sprays of fruit, the fruit inscribed with the 'shou' or long-life emblem. The designs are outlined in underglaze blue and completed in enamels.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain, painted in overglaze enamels","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"}],"styles":[{"text":"Yongzheng","id":"AAT18484"},{"text":"Doucai","id":"x43438"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2009CR3215","2009CR3220","2009BY8513","2006BF9408","2006AH0875"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"136","id":"THES49877"},"free":"","case":"8","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1723-1735","earliest":"1723-01-01","latest":"1735-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Macnaghten Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"15.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"大清雍正年製","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Made in the Yongzheng reign of the Great Qing","transliteration":"Da Qing Yongzheng nian zhi","type":"","note":"On base in underglaze blue"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish, porcelain painted with bats and peaches in enamels, China, Yongzheng mark and period, 1723-1735","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Kerr, Rose <u>Chinese Ceramics, Porcelain of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911</u>, London: V&A, 1998, No. 6"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"bats","id":"x30092"},{"text":"peaches","id":"x31068"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.15-1970"],"accessionNumberNum":"15","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":1970,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-24","recordCreationDate":"2003-02-28","availableToBook":false}}
