The illustration on this dish is taken from a chapter of the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha, written by the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes. Many illustrated books and prints were sent to China to be copied on porcelain. This scene was first depicted in an oil painting entitled The Triumphant Don Quixote Wears the Manbrino's Helmet by the French artist Charles-Antoine Coypel (1694-1752). The paintings were then copied in 1718 in a series of twenty-eight cartoons to be made into tapestries. The popularity of the designs caused them to be reproduced as copper engravings throughout France and then within Europe. ","physicalDescription":"With a painted scene of Don Quixote. In the centre he rides in armour upon a horse led by Sancho, painted principally in carmine pink, turquoise, ochre and black.
