AD 1800.","type":"series title"}],"summaryDescription":"This design for a circular-back armchair has a simple form that demonstrates moderated rococo features such as cabriole legs (curved and tapered in form) and outward scrolling toes. The rococo was a style which became popular from the first half of the 18<sup>th</sup> century, characterised by flamboyant, curvaceous forms and asymmetry. The blue watercolour that Linnell has used on this presentation design suggests that as well as the blue upholstery, the wooden elements of the chair were also painted blue. The yellow lines that he has used suggests that these parts would have been gilded. Gilding was an effective decorative device, used extensively by furniture makers throughout the 18<sup>th</sup> century to emphasise form and opulence. \n\r\nCircular and oval-back chairs were a popular Linnell design and chairs made for the Duke of Argyll at Inverary Castle (attributed to Linnell but of a different style to this design) are good examples of this. Chairs such as this may have been used within the private domestic rooms of ladies such as the boudoir.
