The chairs are simple in design and were probably for Linnell’s own use as preliminary sketches rather than as presentation drawings for his clients. While one chair has a circular-shaped back, the other adopts a cartouche shape and cane would probably have been used to upholster it. Chairs such as these would have been suitable within the private, domestic rooms of the house.
