The incorporation of the vase, which features as the chair splat, demonstrates Linnell’s adaptation of motifs which originated from classical Greece and Rome and were inspired by the discoveries at sites such as Pompeii and Herculaneum. The straight chair legs also embody the stylistic preoccupations of the neoclassical period, in particular the fluted design. Interestingly, Linnell has incorporated two different styles of chair legs, representing the function of this drawing as a presentation piece showing clients the different options of design. \n\r\nThis type of chair would have been extremely appropriate for use within rooms such as libraries and important state rooms, where they would be made as part of a set and placed in a formal arrangement. During the time that Linnell executed this design, he was working alongside the neoclassical architect Robert Adam at Robert Child’s home, Osterley Park. It is probably due to Adam’s influence that Linnell began to incorporate elements such as vases into his designs as Adam was also using these motifs. \r\n","physicalDescription":"A design for a chair with a splat in the shape of a vase which has foliage incorporated into the design. The chair is rectilinear in form and the chair legs are straight but both have different designs. Both legs have patera motifs at the top and foliage ornament at the join between the seat and the chair leg. The chair frame is coloured yellow while the seat is red with a spotted pattern. One of a set of designs for furniture, including chairs and state beds, interior decoration, including pier glasses, and architectural fittings including chimney pieces and doors.
