The mythical creature situated on top of the coat of arms is an example of the incorporation of legendary characters within furniture design which became increasingly popular during the 18<sup>th</sup> century. The curved framework and floral ornamentation also demonstrate the popularity of the rococo style in furniture design. The rococo was a style that became fashionable ca.1730, characterised by asymmetry, ‘S and C’ curved forms and naturalistic imagery. \r\n\nPier-glasses were a popular form of 18<sup>th </sup>century furnishing and were commonly placed on the wall in between two windows (known as the pier wall). Extremely elaborate pier-glasses, such as the ones designed by John Linnell, were often used to emphasise the grandeur of a wealthy household.
