In the late 1920s Fritz Lang (1890-1976) developed a genre of allegorical detective films. They included Spione (Spies), Dr Mabuse, Destiny and M, as well as the visionary film Metropolis. In this powerful expressionist poster, Lang created spatial drama by using elements of the lettering as searchlights in inky space.","physicalDescription":"Colour lithograph poster advertising 'Spione [Spies],' a film written and directed by Fritz Lang.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Fliess","id":"A7856"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"colour lithography","id":"AAT190525"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[{"text":"Expressionist","id":"AAT21502"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2019LX6064","2006AU3148","2017JX2900"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES316883"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Berlin (city)","id":"x28746"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1928","earliest":"1928-01-01","latest":"1928-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"UFA Productions","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"2109","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"966","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Poster by Max Fleiss, 'Spione [Spies],' advertising the UFA film, colour lithograph, Berlin, 1928","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Victoria & Albert Museum Department of Prints and Drawings and Department of Paintings, Accessions 1932. London: HMSO, 1933"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[{"text":"Fritz Lang","id":"A7711"}],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"searchlights","id":"AAT180818"},{"text":"films","id":"AAT136900"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.352-1932"],"accessionNumberNum":"352","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1932,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2003-02-26","availableToBook":true}}
