Conspicuous symbols of wealth, such as the extravagant buckles and high heels of earlier shoes, were no longer appropriate. \r\n\r\nWomen's shoes were also known as slippers. This pair is typical in having broad flattish heels, long pointed toes and a low U-shaped throat (other examples have a V-shaped throat). Simple but elegant, they were made from a wide range of beautiful coloured leathers. \r\n\r\nThe label refers to a 'Ladies’ cheap warehouse for shoes'. This suggests that the shoes were available to a fairly wide public.","physicalDescription":"Pair of women's shoes with pointed toes, trimmed with silk ribbon","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Edward Hogg","id":"AUTH408007"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Leather","id":"AAT11845"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"shoe making","id":"x40339"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Leather","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Footwear","id":"THES48951"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2014HF2922","2014HF2923","2006AW1498","2011FB9102","2014HH7634","2017JY7574"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"012","id":"THES308702"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"012","id":"THES308702"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}],[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1790s","earliest":"1790-01-01","latest":"1799-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"MA/1/H926","id":"ARC163180"},"association":"Archive record"}],"creditLine":"Given by Messrs Harrods Ltd.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"26","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2005","earliest":"2005-01-01","latest":"2005-12-31"},"part":"each","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2005","earliest":"2005-01-01","latest":"2005-12-31"},"part":"each","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2005","earliest":"2005-01-01","latest":"2005-12-31"},"part":"each","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"Label on the insole","script":"'EDWD.Hogg Ladies Cheap Shoe Warehouse. 25 Jermyn Street St James's LONDON","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Label","note":"Label; 'EDWD.Hogg Ladies Cheap Shoe Warehouse. 25 Jermyn Street St James's LONDON; Label on the insole"}],"objectHistory":"These were part of a very large collection of items of dress and accessories which was given to the Museum by Harrods, the department store, in 1913. The collection had been formed by the artist Talbot Hughes, who wrote a book on the history of dress, illustrated with photographs of models wearing items from his collection. A large firm in America had offered to buy the collection and present it to the Metropolitan Museum, New York, but Hughes did not want it to go abroad. At the suggestion of Cecil Harcourt Smith of the V&A, Harrods bought it for £2,500 and gave it to the Museum for the 'public good'. Harrods displayed the collection for three weeks in December 1913.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pair of women's shoes of pink leather, 1780-1799, British, Edward Hogg","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Affordable Fashion (Object No. 17)\r\n17.
