It was a time when, as an ambitious young artist, he looked to the work of Sir Joshua Reynolds as his guide. With its heavy colouring and compositional complexity, this work is quite unlike the modest, simple head-and-shoulders portrait more usually produced at this time both by Cosway and his fellow painters in miniature.
