He believed that a drawing of a plant should follow certain rules rather than be a picture of one particular flower. Artists should portray plants in a rather simplified and stylised way, as in Japanese drawings, although the different varieties would still be recognisable.\r\nHere Day has used firm, clear lines for his modern version of traditional acanthus scrolls. The strange beasts you see here are similar to those used in the decoration of 14th century manuscripts.","physicalDescription":"Textile design","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Day, Lewis Foreman","id":"A8324"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Turnbull & Stockdale Ltd.","id":"A6340"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour drawing","id":"x37878"},{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and watercolour","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[{"text":"Victorian","id":"x29321"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AR9786","2016JG2208"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"T","shelf":"26","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1886","earliest":"1886-01-01","latest":"1886-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Turnbull & Stockdale Ltd.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"44.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"43.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Lewis Foreman Day. \"The Grotesque\".
