He painted a wide range of subjects. These included coastal scenes and landscapes, history and literature, portraits and rustic figures. This watercolour is an excellent example of a rustic figure. Cristall visited Scotland in 1818. He made landscape drawings during this tour, but his watercolours of Scottish people at their work were more important. By this time Scotland was a popular source of wonderful scenery, dramatic history and romantic literature.","physicalDescription":"Water-colour painting showing a peasant girl, full-length, turned to the right and seated at the door of a rustic cottage. The girl is embroidering muslin, her work basket next to her. To the right are three children and a small black dog. In the right background are trees; beyond is Loch Lomond.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Cristall, Joshua","id":"A4331"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"water-colour","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AT9986"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"128","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Scotland","id":"x29130"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1846","earliest":"1846-01-01","latest":"1846-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Miss Jessy Mabel Pott","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"55.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"47.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <u>Victoria & Albert Museum Department of Prints and Drawings and Department of Paintings, Accessions 1962</u>.
