He studied medicine, theology and art. He also visited Rome, where he seems to have met a group of German painters known as the 'Nazarenes'. This group wanted to revive and paint in the style of early German and Italian artists, who believed in 'truth to nature'.  \r\nDyce painted landscapes in both oil and watercolour. These landscape paintings have fresh colours and plenty of detail. The detail in the foreground grasses and plants in this watercolour are typical of Dyce's work.
