His paintings include views of rivers and lakes, both in Britain and abroad, and many of his greatest works are of the shore and sea. <i>The Gurnard</i> seems to belong to a group of studies of fish he made in Margate, Kent, England. These studies are difficult to date. He probably used such studies for the sea pictures that include sea monsters.\r\nJohn Ruskin was the first owner of this watercolour. He was a leading critic and writer on art. He was also a friend of Turner and vigorously promoted his work.","physicalDescription":"Watercolour drawing of a fish against a blue and white background.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Turner, Joseph Mallord William (RA)","id":"A8934"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour drawing","id":"x37878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AV7124","2017JU6149"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WS","id":"THES49603"},"free":"","case":"R","shelf":"76","box":"R"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Margate","id":"x32306"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1839-1840","earliest":"1834-01-01","latest":"1843-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Executors of the late Robert Clarke Edwards.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"19.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Watercolour drawing of a fish entitled 'A Gurnard' by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851).
