New Brunswick, N.J: Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers, p. 76:\n\n'Founded on December 31, 1867, the Alcazar Royal remained an active theatre for comedy and vaudeville until its demise in 1911... In a composition that seems much more French than Belgian, Duyck and Crespin focus upon the celebrities in the audience, clearly absorbed by the spectacle onstage instead of showing us the performers. At the left, top row is Yvette Guilbert, French cabaret performer featured in posters by Toulouse-Lautrec; seated next to her is Edmond Picard (lawyer, writer and champion of the arts); at the lower left edge, are profile portraits of Duyck and Crespin themselves.
