The tale explores the supernatural potential of dreams and the hallucinatory power of a moonlit night. An entomologist is driven mad by his failure to meet the demands of his lady for a blood red butterfly. After a lifetime of searching he ransacks his entire butterfly collection in the throes of nightime delirium. The insects magically awaken and fly from their cases into the night. The entomologist is found dead in the morning, heartbroken.","physicalDescription":"<font -i>The Entomologist's Dream</font -i>, watercolour, a man half lies, half leans on a bed in a room in disarray (bed clothes are in a state of disorder and a chair has toppled onto its back), while on the floor are empty boxes from which butterflies have escaped. He is surrounded by the insects as they encircle him; the room has a blue hue.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dulac, Edmund","id":"A7615"},"association":{"text":"illustrator","id":"AAT25123"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AU3348"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"I","shelf":"55","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour (painting)","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1909","earliest":"1909-01-01","latest":"1909-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr C.
