This image is a composite scene showing various moments of action from a bloodthirsty play, featuring decapitation, deception and grief. The Japanese mastery of decorative pattern, outline and flat washes of colour was a major influence on the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) and other poster artists then active in France and elsewhere. This work, although slightly later in date than Lautrec's posters, which he made in Paris in the 1890s, embodies those aesthetic design principles.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"AAT252788"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"gouache","id":"AAT70114"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"THES250889"},{"text":"painting","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour and gouache on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Play","id":"THES274366"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AU2138"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"PO006","id":"THES403387"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Painting","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1900","earliest":"1895-01-01","latest":"1904-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"1750","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1120","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from C.
