The design of paired ducks is a symbol of marital harmony, so this garment may have been part of a wedding trousseau. The kimono was brought back to Britain by John Bonham-Carter, who visited Japan in 1881-2.","physicalDescription":"<i>Kosode</i> (kimono with small wrist openings) for a woman. It is cut in the classic kimono style. On a rich brown satin weave silk paired ducks amid waves are embroidered all over the garment. The garment is wadded and lined throughout with thin orange-red plain weave silk. The hem is additionally padded and the inside cuffs are faced with red silk crêpe.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"},{"text":"metal thread","id":"x30421"},{"text":"wadding","id":"AAT227771"}],"techniques":[{"text":"satin weave","id":"x37324"},{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Satin weave silk (<i>shu</i>) with embroidery in silk and metallic thread","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Marriage","id":"THES48921"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo","id":"AAT106643"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AU5117","2006BF2165","2006AU5115","2006AN1528"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES311777"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Kimono","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1840-1870","earliest":"1840-01-01","latest":"1870-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"183","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"including collar","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"126","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"across sleeves","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased.
