The couple were taught by professional artists, including Sir George Hayter, and later, Edwin Landseer. These professionals were responsible for the more complicated parts of the printmaking process, such as biting the copper plates in acid. Though Victoria found etching to be a ‘fascinating but difficult process’, she produced 62 prints, compared to Albert’s 25. The couple also enjoyed collaborating on plates together and set up a printing press at Buckingham Palace.\r\nThese early prints reveal how etching was an ideal technique for curious amateurs who lacked formal training – they could ‘draw’ on the copper plate as they would a piece of paper. They also show how Queen Victoria, like many amateur women printmakers, turned to everyday domestic scenes for artistic inspiration. Her etchings often feature her beloved children and pets, as seen here.","physicalDescription":"An etching depicting Victoria, Princess Royal, Empress Frederick of Germany, as a baby in the arms of a nurse.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Victoria Queen of Great Britain and Empress of India","id":"N2035"},"association":{"text":"printmaker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etching","id":"AAT53241"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Royalty","id":"THES48899"},{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2019LL5289"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"TOPIC","shelf":"16","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1841","earliest":"1841-01-01","latest":"1841-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr P.
