Designs of real and mythical animals and birds confined within circles and other geometric shapes, derive from earlier prototypes from the Near East and other silk weaving centres further East. The design is fairly complex with wingless griffins and peacocks within lozenges and a Kufic (a particular type of Islamic script) inscription above. This example is very finely woven and shows the degree of accomplishment which weaving had reached. Luxury textiles were highly prized, very expensive and often used as diplomatic and royal gifts. Apart from their intrinsic and artistic value, textiles were very portable compared to other, heavier or breakable, artefacts.","physicalDescription":"Brocade, woven in red and olive green silks and gold thread on a cream-coloured ground, with a design of wingless griffins and peacocks within lozenges and kufic characters.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"Metallic Thread","id":"x30416"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Woven","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Woven silk","categories":[{"text":"Islam","id":"THES48932"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[{"text":"Islamic Spain","id":"x46389"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006BC7768","2006AF7247","2012FE7796","2012FF6474","2012FH8604","2017JU0116","2018KU0259","2018KU4936","2018KU4937","2018KU4938","2018KU4939","2018KU4940","2018KU4941","2018KU4942","2018KU4943","2018KU4944","2018KU4945","2018KU4946","2018KU4947","2018KU4948"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES312799"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES312799"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"fragment","id":"AAT117130"}],[{"text":"Woven silk","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Almeria","id":"x33067"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1100-1150","earliest":"1095-01-01","latest":"1150-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"14.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"unframed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"14","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"unframed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"14","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Unframed dimensions","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Woven inscription on base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"Kufic","translation":"The Merciful","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Not Kufic, perhaps North African, Sicilian or Spanish.\r\n\r\nNote by A.R.
