From 1903 Leonetto Cappiello began creating fantastical figures or animals in his posters. These then became associated with the product and thus became a form of brand character. His use of dynamic figures leaping or dancing out of their plain backgrounds towards the spectator made his designs highly successful. Some were repeated for more than 20 years.","physicalDescription":"Colour lithograph poster advertising coffee depicting a man in joyous ecstacy, smiling and holding a silver coffee pot whilst floating on a thick cloud of steam which rises from an oversized decorative cup and saucer full of coffee. Caricatures posters paintings', 1981:\n\n\"In the poster for Café Martin, Cappiello created, by personifying the aroma, the essence of coffee, the 'genie of coffee,' released like the genie of the lamp. The Turk sailing on the fragrant vapors escaping from a richly decorated cup, the heavy and rich atmosphere suggest the charm, mystery, and refinement of the Orient of the Thousand and One Nights. The strength of Cappiello's poster lies in the balance of forms: the inertia of the cup despite the movement of the decor and the elegant and powerful arabesque of the steam coiling around the character. The artist's approach is the same for Café Martin and for the Bitter Campari.\" "}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"coffee","id":"AAT254662"},{"text":"coffee cups","id":"AAT43216"},{"text":"advertisements","id":"AAT193993"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.15-1926"],"accessionNumberNum":"15","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1926,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-28","recordCreationDate":"2003-02-13","availableToBook":true}}
