The curved form of the cannister is modelled on earlier designs in silver or pewter with similar porcelain cannisters being manufactured in China from the 1770s. The design on the body of the vessel, depicting a landscape scene of a pagoda and a man carrying baskets over a bridge, was a European adaption of a traditional Chinese landscape. Chinese landscape patterns were extremely popular with similar designs incorporated into pieces produced by European ceramic factories. Gilding was often added in English workshops as Chinese gilding was considered of inferior quality as it wore away easily. ","physicalDescription":"Tea caddy and lid, painted in blue and decorated with gilding, it is of rectangular section with arched top and cylindrical neck; on the sides are landscapes and buildings; the top and the cover, which have a wavy edge, are decorated with gilt festoons and blue floral sprays. Painted in imitation of English transfer-printed ware. The gilding was added in England, probably at Baxter's workshop in London.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Baxter, Thomas","id":"A8131"},"association":{"text":"gilders","id":"AAT25261"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"porcelain with blue and gilt decoration","categories":[{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006BG1794","2010EB2373","2017JY0212"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"136","id":"THES49877"},"free":"","case":"4","shelf":"7","box":""},{"current":{"text":"136","id":"THES49877"},"free":"","case":"4","shelf":"7","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"TEA CADDY","id":""}],[{"text":"LID","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"gilded","id":"AAT53789"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1780-90","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1790-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss Alice Hanslip","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"06/06/2013","earliest":"2013-06-06","latest":"2013-06-06"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"3.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"06/06/2013","earliest":"2013-06-06","latest":"2013-06-06"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"13.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"06/06/2013","earliest":"2013-06-06","latest":"2013-06-06"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Miss Alice Hanslip, accessioned in 1907.
