The printing process for this image was colour lithography (printing from stone) or chromolithography. In the 1880s and 1890s American chromolithographers worked in part for ever-increasing advertising, particularly for patent medicines and soap, and in part for the mass reproduction of oil paintings. In some advertisements they were able to combine the two, as shown here. In spite of advanced technical skills, however, their innately conservative approach and desire for exact reproduction meant that they resisted much of the influence of innovative European poster design.","physicalDescription":"Poster depicting a woman sledging.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bencke, H.","id":"A7993"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Sport","id":"THES48893"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AR9134"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"Y","shelf":"76","box":"B"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1887","earliest":"1887-01-01","latest":"1887-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given in an exchange with the Library of Congress Poster Collection, Washington D.C.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"627","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"330","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This poster was given to the Museum as part of an exchange between the Library of Congress poster collection in Washington D.C. and the V&A ","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Poster advertising Willimatic spool cotton.
