W. N. Pugin (1812-1852) was the original designer of this Gothic throne. He designed it as part of the rebuilding of the Palace of Westminster in the 1840s. The throne was partly modelled on the Coronation Chair and was used by monarchs at State Opening ceremonies. \r\n\r\nFor his own coronation, Edward VII (ruled 1901-1910) wanted an extra throne made for his consort, Queen Alexandra. He ordered a drawing to be made of Pugin’s work. As the inscription on the throne says, he then specified that Holland and Sons should make a smaller version of Pugin’s throne for the ceremony. There were to be minor changes of detail.","physicalDescription":"Pencil and watercolour drawing on card","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Holland & Sons","id":"A9123"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and watercolour on card","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edwardian","id":"AAT21236"},{"text":"Gothic revival","id":"AAT21452"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AP3596","2023NN7671"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WS (VA)","id":"THES49603"},"free":"","case":"R","shelf":"27","box":"R"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1901","earliest":"1901-01-01","latest":"1901-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs A.
