They were held on two successive Mondays, 18 and 25 June 1821. The celebrations commemorated the Battle of Waterloo of 1815, when the Duke of Wellington defeated the French emperor Napoleon. They also celebrated the approaching coronation of George IV of England.\r\n\r\nThe entertainment lasted for four hours. There were plays, music, a masquerade, refreshments and a ball. This watercolour captures the glamour of the event and the anticipation of the audience.","physicalDescription":"Watercolour depicting a theatre and a crowd, illuminated by gas light.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Schnebbelie, Robert Blemmell","id":"A7527"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pen","id":"x47746"},{"text":"wash","id":"AAT11051"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BG1994","2017JV8371"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"WD","shelf":"51","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1821","earliest":"1821-01-01","latest":"1821-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"18.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"size of paper","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"18.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"size of paper","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Watercolour entitled 'Exterior of Drury Lane Theatre', by R.B.
