He produced a great deal of Gothic furniture. He was close in spirit to the architect A. W. N. Pugin (1812-1852), who advocated a return to the Gothic style. He was particularly close to Pugin in the serious way he adhered to the tenet ‘truth to materials’. He advocated simple lines and traditional methods of construction. He used pegged joints and did not conceal the structure. These principles influenced the next generation of architects and designers who formed what is now called the Arts and Crafts movement. Seddon’s style was particularly appropriate for churches and vicarages. His plain, practical and solid furniture was also used in the homes of lay people.","physicalDescription":"Pencil and watercolour drawing on paper","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Seddon, John Pollard","id":"A8829"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and watercolour","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[{"text":"Victorian","id":"x29321"},{"text":"Gothic revival","id":"AAT21452"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AP3539"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"SB19","shelf":"SH3","box":"94/J/15"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1860","earliest":"1855-01-01","latest":"1864-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"33.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"33.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design for a wardrobe","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Wardrobe","id":"x31944"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["D.1787-1896"],"accessionNumberNum":"1787","accessionNumberPrefix":"D","accessionYear":1896,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-07","recordCreationDate":"2003-02-12","availableToBook":false}}
