It favoured rough, varied and irregular forms. This watercolour is set in the Lake District of north-west England. Visits to the region increased greatly after the artist William Gilpin (1724-1804) published a book describing the picturesque landscape.\r\n\r\nThomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) made several watercolour drawings to illustrate a verse by William Combe (1741-1823). The verse was intended as a satire on Gilpin and his readers.","physicalDescription":"Dr. Syntax drawing the waterfall at Ambleside, while his man Patrick is eating voraciously; Watercolour, pen and ink, on paper.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rowlandson, Thomas","id":"A2367"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"water-colour","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"pen and ink","id":"x30618"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"watercolour drawing","id":"x37878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour, pen and ink, on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AE7959","2011EY3479"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF (VA)","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"TOPIC","shelf":"3A","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1812","earliest":"1807-01-01","latest":"1816-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"DYCE.802","id":"O1140044"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.803","id":"O1025245"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.804","id":"O1140058"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.805","id":"O1025096"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.806","id":"O1140059"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.807","id":"O1140064"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.808","id":"O1140075"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.809","id":"O1042343"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.810","id":"O1140081"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.811","id":"O1140082"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.812","id":"O1140083"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.814","id":"O1140094"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.815","id":"O1140095"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.816","id":"O1140096"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.817","id":"O1140097"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"DYCE.818","id":"O1140099"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Rev.
