It would have been attached to a gentleman’s watch chain and worn just below the waist from a small trouser pocket known as a ‘fob’. Seals were functional as well as decorative items, at a time when letters had to be sealed with wax. The three-sided topaz of this swivelling seal is engraved with a scene of smoke billowing from burning ships at the Battle of Trafalgar of 1805 (when the British under Nelson defeated the French). The inscription reads ‘ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN THIS DAY WILL DO HIS DUTY’. The words were engraved in reverse so that they would be the right way round on the sealing wax. The deeply chased scrolls and flowers of the gold mount are typical of the Rococo Revival of the early 19th century.","physicalDescription":"Gold with citrine, one face with an intaglio with Battle of Trafalgar (1805)\r\nInscribed 'England expects that every man this day will do his duty.'","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"citrine","id":"AAT209734"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraved citrine mounted in gold","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2007BN6214","2007BN6203","2006AE9694","2006AN7452"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91M","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"66","shelf":"D","box":"12"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Seal","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1815-20","earliest":"1815-01-01","latest":"1820-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Miss P.
