The intelligent and alert turn of the horse's head and the energy of its well-muscled body is testament to the immense skill of the Tang potter. Emperors of the Tang dynasty (618-907) kept their horses in special stables and parks that occupied large tracts of land around the Tang capital Chang'an (present-day Xian in Shaanxi province). Important tombs held models of these desirable animals.","physicalDescription":"The horse stands erect with head turned slightly to the left, on a small, thinly potted base. The bristling mane and tail are coloured a deep amber yellow, the cloth covered saddle is green, the parts of the under-saddle in dark brown and mottled green, brown and white, the harness and other applied, stamped trappings in dark brown. The body of the horse is in a straw-white glaze, unevenly mottled and tinged with the other colours.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"lead glaze","id":"AAT233430"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, with coloured lead glazes","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"}],"styles":[{"text":"Tang","id":"AAT18420"},{"text":"Sancai","id":"AAT18511"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AX4001","2006AH0832","2018KW8310"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"46","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure of horse","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"700-750","earliest":"0700-01-01","latest":"0750-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Solomon Gift","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"76.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"84.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"28.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tomb figure of a horse, earthenware with coloured lead glazes, 700-750, Tang dynasty, Chinese.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Liefkes, Reino and Hilary Young (eds.) <i>Masterpieces of World Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum</i>.
