The South-east Indian coast was renowned for its kalamkari textiles, and this piece is one of the finest surviving examples. The Iranian elements in the design - the hunters' costumes, for example - are typical of the arts of the Deccan sultanates, although the  floorspread was formerly in the toshakhana (textile store) of Amber Palace,  Rajasthan. It bears the stamp of the Raja Jai Singh of Amber (1622-68) on the  reverse. ","physicalDescription":"Rectangular floorspread of buff-coloured cotton ground with a hand-drawn design worked in mordants, resists and dyes. Along the long edges are drawn scenes of sportsmen shooting partridges and pigeons, a man toasting wine to his beloved, and two men drinking together. The figures stand among verdant trees bearing fantastically large flowers and fruit with birds perched and flying throughout. The tops of the trees extend to the middle of the floorspread where they meet those of the other side to fill the whole field. The border is composed of a repeat formed of palmettes amid floral latticework on a dark ground, borded by guard borders of red with filigree-like flowers in white. The panel is composed of four separate strips of cloth sewn together before painting. Many of the colours are faded from their original shades, and the darker colours have disintegrated in places due to the long-term corrosive impact of the mordant the dyers used to create their
