The design, of a trellis pattern with celestial winged figures in lobed medallions, is not printed but hand-drawn, and meticulously reists-dyed and mordant dyed. \r\nThe hanging was previously attributed to the northern Deccan, possibly Burhanpur, but the use of this very specific resist and mordanting technique suggests that it was in fact made in the area known as the Coromandel Coast in today's Andhra Pradesh. The presence of some motifs that also occur on chintz textiles exported to Thailand from that area strengthens this attribution.","physicalDescription":"Large rectangular canopy hanging of resist-dyed and mordant-dyed cotton. With a trellis design of women and mythical beings in lobed medallions. The border around three sides has a row of winged figures in lobed medallions. The ground is mainly green, maroon, yellow, blue, black and white. Probably for a Hindu shrine.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton (textile)","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cotton, mordant-dyed and resist-dyed","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Hinduism","id":"THES48941"},{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2018LC3028","2018LC3023","2018LC3024","2018LC3025","2018LC3026","2006AX3881","2006AX3882"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES325656"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Canopy","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Andhra Pradesh","id":"x29820"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"early 19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"2740","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/09/2018","earliest":"2018-09-19","latest":"2018-09-19"},"part":"Top edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2725","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/09/2018","earliest":"2018-09-19","latest":"2018-09-19"},"part":"Bottom edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"2194","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/09/2018","earliest":"2018-09-19","latest":"2018-09-19"},"part":"Proper right","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"2182","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/09/2018","earliest":"2018-09-19","latest":"2018-09-19"},"part":"Proper left","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"20","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/09/2018","earliest":"2018-09-19","latest":"2018-09-19"},"part":"Weighed on roller","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Rectangular canopy hanging of resist-dyed and mordant-dyed cotton, probably made in Andhra Pradesh, early 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Swallow, Deborah and John Guy eds. <font u>Arts of India: 1550-1900</font u>. text by Rosemary Crill, John Guy, Veronica Murphy, Susan Stronge and Deborah Swallow.
