The red Chinese characters in between the flowers mean 'double happiness', a suitable decoration for a marriage garment. The robe is tapestry woven in silk, a technique that exploits picture-making possibilities, just as the great wool tapestries of Europe have done.","physicalDescription":"Marriage robe of silk tapestry (<i>kesi</i>). Swastika pattern in gold on a mauve ground; lotus plants with pink flowers and marriage symbols-twofold joy- in red scattered over the ground. Kesi border round neck, side openings, hem and sleeves of a similar design on a black ground. The border is edged, on the outer side, with a black and gold thread tissue of swastika pattern; on the inner side by a narrow ribbon with a design of dragons on a gold ground. The sleeves are straight and loose. The robe is lined with yellow silk.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk tapestry (<i>kesi</i>) with silk lining","categories":[{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Marriage","id":"THES48921"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2019MD0317","2019MD0291","2008BW1477","2006AR9492","2012FE7898","2012FE7945","2012FE7950","2017JT7082","2017JT7107"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES313232"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Woman's robe (changyi)b","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with Art Fund support","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"140","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"205","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1947/374.
