Ring foot.\r\nThe sparsely applied patterns are chiefly geometric. Other motifs are typical of Samanid Khorasan, including knots of Solomon with trilobed palmettes extending from the sides. On the triangular facets there are tight-knit chain patterns enclosing knots of Solomon framed by twin fillets and incised with dividers. On the diamond-shaped facets are decorations consisting of large roundels framed by scrolls carrying half-palmettes. The tiny rings projecting from each point were presumably intended for small pendentives in keeping with the Khorasan tradition of bejewelled vessels.\r\nThe opening has a geometric openwork pattern framed by a copper fillet.\r\nPatina: dark dull green sulphorous patches on a dark purplish red oxidized ground. One of the upper triangular facets has been cleaned which shows the original alloy to be olive yellow.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"},{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"inlaid","id":"AAT53850"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cast brass with engraved decoration","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[{"text":"Iranian","id":"x35873"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AF6898","2012FE1190","2017JY0244"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES367334"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Khorasan","id":"THES412603"},"association":{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Iran","id":"x30220"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"900-1000","earliest":"0900-01-01","latest":"1000-12-31"},"association":{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"18.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"12.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"body","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"5.15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum, underside","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"6.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"opening","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Height: 18.8 - 18.9cm; Diameter: 5.1 - 5.15cm","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased for £4 8s from Monsieur Jules Richard through Major Robert Murdoch Smith in November 1889\n\nHistorical significance: No other metal specimen of this type is on record.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dodecagonal cast bronze vase, engraved and inlaid with copper, with attachment points for small pendant jewels, Iran (Khorasan), 10th century.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Melikian-Chirvani, A.S. <u>Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World.</u> London:HMSO, 1982. p44.
