Chinese architecture influenced the design of this prayer wheel, which may have been a gift from a Chinese dignitary to a senior Tibetan monk. The spindle at the top turns the drum, which contains a roll of paper on which Buddhist prayers are written. Architectural motifs often appear on ritual objects such as incense burners and shrines.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"copper alloy","id":"AAT10942"},{"text":"Turquoise","id":"AAT11164"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Gilt","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Copper, partly gilt, with turquoises","categories":[{"text":"Buddhism","id":"THES48984"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AK4569"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES343768"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Prayer wheel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 18th century - 19th century","earliest":"1695-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased from the Dowager Countess of Dudley","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"39","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"20","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from the Dowager Countess of Dudley, Pembroke Lodge, Richmond Park, Surrey.
