The habit of snuff-taking spread to China from the West during the 17th century and became established in the 18th century. People generally carried snuff in a small bottle. By the 20th century these bottles had become collectors' items, owing to the great variety of materials and decorative techniques used in their production.","physicalDescription":"The bottle is an oval flattened flask form carved from dark grey nephrite jade with a white skin. It has a flatish amethyst stopper and a flat base. The white skin has been used to depict figures on both sides of the bottle. The decoration depicts a bearded man beneath a pine tree growing from a rock; his arms rest on a <font i>qin</font> (a zither), beside him is a crackled vase or wine vat. On the reverse is Liu Hai with a string of coins and a three legged toad. He holds a fly-whisk and rests his foot on a bottle gourd.
