At the time Alfred Stevens (1817-1875) seemed to be its most promising exponent. His work set the style for the early buildings on the South Kensington Museum site. But he disagreed with Henry Cole over the methods of design teaching, which meant that he did not actually design any of the Museum’s structure. He did design the Museum of Practical Geology in Jermyn Street in the St James’s area of London. This museum contained examples of industrial and artistic products that were made from raw materials mined from the earth.
