The habit of snuff-taking spread to China from the West during the 17th century and became established in the 18th century. People generally carried snuff in a small bottle. By the 20th century these bottles had become collectors' items, owing to the great variety of materials and decorative techniques used in their production.","physicalDescription":"The bottle is a flattened flask form with a short cylindrical neck and no stopper. It is made from white nephrite jade carved in low relief. \r\nThe decoration depicts fruit and foliage, probably persimmon.\r\nThe straight foot has carved decoration continued from above. The bottle is solid underneath but is incised with a seal script motto <font i>'Chou wei xiang jin'</font>, 'Pungent flavour bring everyone together'.\r\nThe carving is spare and subtle, and probably dates from the period between 1760 and 1812 when jade carving flourished. The inscription underneath the foot is a suprisingly inelegant motto for such a bottle.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"nephrite","id":"AAT11120"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carved","id":""}],"materialsAndTechniques":"White nephrite jade carved in low relief","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Hardstone","id":"THES270137"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2021MW4393","2006AU9489","2006BF1490","2006BF1489"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES409669"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"SNUFF BOTTLE","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1760-1812","earliest":"1760-01-01","latest":"1812-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"6.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Chou wei xiang Jin'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"Chinese","medium":"","method":"incised","position":"Underneath foot","script":"","translation":"'Pungent flavour brings everyone together'","transliteration":"","type":"Textual information","note":"Textual information; Chinese; Underneath foot; incised"}],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mr. George Salting, accessioned in 1910.
