By his own account, his first jewellery was made for his sister’s dolls when he was aged 8, out of discarded copper wire. Wire remained an important element in his larger work and his preferred material for jewellery. He worked in both silver and brass, either hammering or twisting the wire to achieve strong, simple forms. Calder’s jewellery exemplifies a light-hearted genius. It introduced a highly individual note to the jewellery of the 1930s.","physicalDescription":"Conical spirals of brass wire, increasing in size towards the centre joined by brass loops.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Calder, Alexander","id":"A7464"},"association":{"text":"jeweller","id":"AAT25409"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Conical spirals of brass wire, joined together by brass loops","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AX6139","2006AX6182","2006AT7551","2006AN7468"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"55","shelf":"C","box":"6"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Necklace","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1938","earliest":"1938-01-01","latest":"1938-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"39.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"unfastened","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Exhibition R.F. 2002/758","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Necklace of conical spirals of brass wire.
