It was sold by many of the leading jewellers. This style of earring (with three drops from a central top) is known as a girandole, and was very typical of the mid- to late 18th century. Before Australian opals became accessible, the opal was a rare stone. Here its shimmering beauty was achieved by setting a pink foil beneath a milky blue glass.","physicalDescription":"Pair of girandole earrings with circular top and three drops hanging from a stylized bow, made of silver with opaline and colourless paste (glass)","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paste (glass)","id":"AAT10803"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Opaline and white pastes (glass) set in silver","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006BJ4275","2006BJ4277","2006AT9310","2006AN7667"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Earring","id":""}],[{"text":"Earring","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1760","earliest":"1755-01-01","latest":"1764-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dame Joan Evans","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pair of earrings, opaline and white pastes (glass) set in silver, probably made in France, about 1760","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"bow","id":"x30687"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.154A-1975","M.154B-1975"],"accessionNumberNum":"154","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1975,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Earring [1]","Earring [2]"],"assets":["2019LP7858","2019LR6594","2019LT1571","2019LT1533","2019LU6126","2019LT9844"],"recordModificationDate":"2026-06-04","recordCreationDate":"2003-01-21","availableToBook":false}}
