This silver-gilt beaker containing a knife, fork and spoon would have been vital for a prosperous person travelling in Britain. The handles of the spoon and fork unscrew and can be fitted in the wood and baize frame inside the beaker. The original knife handle would also have unscrewed, but the current blade is probably a 19th-century replacement. Forks were not generally used in Britain before the 17th century. Travellers in the 1590s noted that the English tended to 'throw their food into the mouth as you would toss hay into a barn'..

The set would also have included a nutmeg grater, a spice box and a corkscrew, but these no longer survive.

People
The cutlery and beaker bear the mark 'TT' beneath a coronet, which may be the mark of the goldsmith Thomas Tysoe (active 1690-1700).

Design & Designing
The beaker and cutlery handles are beautifully engraved with floral scrolls. The beaker has a putto (cherub) on one side. On the other, we see two winged figures holding a blank escutcheon (heraldic shield), which may possibly have been intended for an inscription or a coat of arms.","physicalDescription":"Set consisting of a beaker, knife, fork and spoon with maker's mark T.T; silver-gilt;","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Tysoe, Thomas","id":"A8935"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver gilt, engraved, with wooden frame inside beaker for cutlery and spice box (now missing)","categories":[{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"},{"text":"Food vessels and Tableware","id":""},{"text":"Tableware and cutlery","id":""},{"text":"British Galleries","id":"THES48985"},{"text":"Silver","id":"THES251836"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AU3219","2006AT6291","2006AM6361","2017JT8001","2017JT8063"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"54B","id":"THES49248"},"free":"","case":"CA2","shelf":"","box":"31"},{"current":{"text":"54B","id":"THES49248"},"free":"","case":"CA2","shelf":"","box":"31"},{"current":{"text":"54B","id":"THES49248"},"free":"","case":"CA2","shelf":"","box":"31"},{"current":{"text":"54B","id":"THES49248"},"free":"","case":"CA2","shelf":"","box":"31"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Canteen","id":""}],[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}],[{"text":"Fork","id":""}],[{"text":"Spoon","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1690","earliest":"1685-01-01","latest":"1694-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"8.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"T T below a coronet - Jackson, 1989, mark for 1690-91","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Engraved","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Town mark: London","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Made in London; maker's mark 'TT' beneath a coronet appears on the beaker only; possibly for Thomas Tysoe (active 1690-1700)","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Set consisting of a beaker, knife, fork and spoon with maker's mark T.T; silver-gilt; London, Britain; ca.1690.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Dorothy Fallon, 'A Couvert for Travelling', unpublished essay for the V&A/RCA History of Art Course, 2008"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"foliage","id":"AAT11892"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"British Galleries:\nGENTLEMAN'S TRAVELLING ACCESSORIES
\nAbout 1700 British gentry often travelled with extensive luggage.
