The small tools and accessories that might be incorporated included a watch, scissors, tweezers, magnifying glass, scent flask and miniature notebook or ivory writing tablet.\r\n\r\nCut steel was a fashionable material for jewellery, buttons, buckles, sword hilts and watch chains in the decades around 1800. They were made from brightly polished rivets, their ends faceted to imitate diamonds. Such pieces gave a grey but powerful glitter. Originally an English speciality, the production of cut steel had spread to other centres in Europe by the early 19th century.","physicalDescription":"Chatelaine, cut steel, the hook-plate formed as a crowned monogram.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"Probably made by Thornhill & Co., Bond Street, London"}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Loxodonta africana","id":"THES280653"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cut steel and ivory (African Loxodonta)","categories":[{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AN7680","2019ME6246","2019ME6250"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES412436"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"chatelaines","id":"AAT209297"}],[{"text":"scissors","id":"AAT23459"}],[{"text":"scent bottles","id":"AAT198895"}],[{"text":"case","id":"THES251008"}],[{"text":"lids","id":"AAT45712"}],[{"text":"thimbles","id":"AAT247551"}],[{"text":"needle cases","id":"THES411422"}],[{"text":"cigar cutters","id":"AAT256320"}],[{"text":"case","id":"THES251008"}],[{"text":"case","id":"THES251008"}],[{"text":"letter openers","id":"AAT259185"}],[{"text":"notebook case","id":"x39989"}],[{"text":"notebooks","id":"AAT27195"}],[{"text":"magnifying glass","id":"x39725"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1863 - ca. 1885","earliest":"1858-01-01","latest":"1889-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Pfungst Reavil Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"53.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"35","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"The measurements reflect the object as a whole.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Gill MacGregor (see references) has identified the monogram and crown to be that used by Alexandra, Princess of Wales between 1863 and 1885.
